I wrote this guide about six months ago and spent a summer away from the city picking at it, and then posted it to a now-defunct blog in August. Its purpose was to provide a run-down of basic information about New York City that a writer couldn’t necessarily pick up from a guide book (at least not without making his characters look like tourists). I got a lot of great feedback on it, and it went through a couple of iterations in its first few weeks of existence.
The original blog is gone, but I wanted to keep the post up as a resource. I figured, too, that this could be an interesting project — to maybe keep track of things I notice people consistently getting wrong, or to jump in every now and then with observations I feel might be useful to NYC-focused writers.
So, welcome to “How to Write in New York City: the Blog.” Suggestions welcome.
